Baffles rest along the corner of a home where the roof meets the siding. Underneath it, there’s a small piece of wood with several holes cut out which allows air to enter the attic. When air flows into these holes, it travels in between the baffle and insulation, where it ultimately ends up in the attic.

One of the greatest benefits of using attic baffles is the natural protection it provides against ice dams. Ice dams occur when snow on the roof melts and refreezes into ice, Once the weight of this snow and ice mixture reaches a certain point, it creates an avalanche that travels down the side of the house. Depending on the severity of the ice dam, it could potentially damage the gutters, siding and anything surrounding the exterior of the home.

Of course, another reason why you should use baffles in the attic is because they ward off mold and mildew. When families crank up their home’s heat during the winter, some of this heat rises up into the attic where it creates a warm, moist environment for mold to grow and thrive. Thankfully, baffles discourage mold and mildew due to their ability to bring fresh air into the attic.
There’s really no reason why you shouldn’t use baffles in your attic. You can purchase them from most home improvement stores for about a couple bucks a piece, which is a small price to pay considering all of the benefits they provide.
